Calculation Methodology & Engineering Standards
This document provides a full mathematical disclosure of the formulas, density coefficients, ASTM yields, and cost estimation algorithms implemented across AllToolsly DIY calculators.
01 Zero-Latency In-Browser Architecture
Unlike legacy calculator websites that transmit form values to remote servers for server-side evaluation, AllToolsly DIY executes 100% of mathematical models in client-side Vanilla JavaScript. This architectural decision eliminates HTTP round-trip latency (0ms input-to-output update delay), eliminates server calculation logs, and keeps your private dimensional blueprints stored strictly on your local device.
02 Concrete Slabs, Footings & Sonotubes
A. Slab Volume Equation
For rectangular slabs, patios, and driveways, volume is computed by converting all dimensions to feet and dividing by 27 cubic feet per cubic yard:
B. Cylindrical Post Hole & Sonotube Footing Equation
Cylindrical piers, fence post holes, and Sonotube foundations use circular cylinder geometry:
Total Volume (yd³) = [ Volume per Hole (ft³) × Quantity of Holes ] / 27
C. ASTM C387 Pre-Mixed Bag Yields
Commercial bagged concrete does not equal the dry volume of raw cement and aggregates because water fills interstitial voids. We calibrate our bag breakdowns to standard ASTM C387 yields:
| Bag Weight | Cubic Foot Yield | Bags per Cubic Yard | Primary Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 lb Bag | 0.60 ft³ | 45 Bags | Structural slabs, footings, patios (Most economical) |
| 60 lb Bag | 0.45 ft³ | 60 Bags | Standard DIY projects, steps, post holes |
| 40 lb Bag | 0.30 ft³ | 90 Bags | Repairs, small fence posts, tight access areas |
D. Bulk Truck vs. Bagged Cost Comparison
Ready-Mix concrete trucks typically impose a minimum order fee (usually 3 to 4 cubic yards) and an additional "short-load" surcharge for orders under 5 cubic yards. For projects requiring > 1.5 cubic yards, ready-mix delivery becomes significantly less labor-intensive than manual bag mixing (which requires hand-mixing 68+ eighty-pound bags per 1.5 yards).
03 Landscaping, Mulch & Bulk Aggregates
A. Tonnage Conversion Formula
Gravel quarries, rock yards, and landscape suppliers bill gravel and stone by weight (Short Tons = 2,000 lbs). The volume-to-weight calculation incorporates real bulk density coefficients established by the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA):
| Material Type | Bulk Density | Tons per Cubic Yard |
|---|---|---|
| Crushed Stone #57 / Driveway Gravel | 2,800 lbs/yd³ | 1.40 Tons |
| Pea Gravel (3/8" Smooth River Pebble) | 2,700 lbs/yd³ | 1.35 Tons |
| Paver Base Sand / Concrete Sand | 2,700 lbs/yd³ | 1.35 Tons |
| River Rock (1" to 3" Smooth Stone) | 2,600 lbs/yd³ | 1.30 Tons |
| Dry Garden Topsoil / Screened Loam | 2,100 lbs/yd³ | 1.05 Tons |
| Hardwood Shredded Mulch / Bark Chips | 600 lbs/yd³ | 0.30 Tons |
B. Mulch Bag Coverage
Retail mulch bags sold in home improvement centers come in 2.0 cubic foot bags (13.5 bags per cubic yard) and 3.0 cubic foot bags (9.0 bags per cubic yard). Our algorithms round up to the nearest whole bag after adding the selected jobsite waste factor.
04 Epoxy Resin, River Tables & Deep Pour Math
Epoxy casting formulas require precise volumetric conversion between physical geometric cavity dimensions and chemical liquid volumes:
Fluid Ounces = Total Cubic Inches / 1.805
Gallons = Total Cubic Inches / 231.0
*Note: For organic river table slabs with varying void widths, our calculator models average cavity width along the path or irregular perimeter deductions.
05 Architectural Painting & Wall Deductions
Gross wall area is calculated by multiplying room perimeter by ceiling height. Standard architectural deductions are applied for structural openings:
- Standard Door Deduction: 21 sq ft (3 ft × 7 ft standard exterior/interior door).
- Standard Window Deduction: 15 sq ft (3 ft × 5 ft standard sash window).
Gallons Needed = [ Net Area × Number of Coats ] / Spread Rate (sq ft/gal)
Spread rates are adjusted dynamically: Smooth Drywall = 350 sq ft/gal; Textured Drywall / Unprimed Wood = 300 sq ft/gal; Rough Stucco / Masonry = 200 sq ft/gal.
06 Tile Coverage, Thinset Mortar & Grout Weight
A. ANSI A118 Grout Weight Equation
Grout weight calculations depend on tile length, tile width, tile thickness, and grout joint width. We execute the industry-standard Tile Council of North America (TCNA) grout equation:
B. Thinset Mortar Coverage
Thinset mortar requirements are calibrated based on trowel notch dimensions:
- 1/4" × 1/4" Square Notch Trowel: Yields ~80 to 90 sq ft per 50 lb bag (small-format tile < 8"x8").
- 1/4" × 3/8" Square Notch Trowel: Yields ~55 to 65 sq ft per 50 lb bag (standard 12"x12" to 12"x24" tile).
- 1/2" × 1/2" Square Notch Trowel: Yields ~40 to 45 sq ft per 50 lb bag (large format tile ≥ 15"x15").
07 Jobsite Waste & Form Deflection Contingencies
Calculators that only calculate raw mathematical volume lead to jobsite shortages because they ignore real-world physics. Our waste selectors apply realistic engineering safety margins:
- +0% (Zero Margin): Theoretical minimum. Strictly for estimating raw geometry without ground irregularities.
- +5% (Simple Rectangles): Standard for pre-cast forms, clean trenches, or simple room squares.
- +10% (Contractor Standard Recommended): Accounts for subgrade settling, uneven form boards, spill loss, and edge cuts.
- +15% to 20% (Diagonal / Complex): Recommended for herringbone tile layouts, irregular curved garden borders, and rough excavation.
